Asbestosis

Asbestos Illnesses:

Asbestosis:

This is a form of lung disease resulting from the inhalation of asbestos particles marked by severe fibrosis. The asbestos fibres which are inhaled may irritate the lung and cause scar tissue. This may then prevent oxygen from being absorbed leading to breathlessness.

Asbestosis is usually diagnosed following a Chest X Ray and a history of working with asbestos. This is what differentiates the disease from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (a condition where the lungs can become scarred and which can be hereditary or by inhaling dust).

Symptoms include laboured breathing during routine tasks and exercise, chest pain and coughing. Doctors prescribe breathing treatments, prescription medication and sometimes surgery for patients who develop asbestosis.

A person may exhibit dry inspiratory crackles, which are clicking or rattling noises made by the lungs during inhalation, and “clubbing” of the fingers, which may include softening of the fingernail beds, bulging of the end of the finger(s) and misshapen nails – all of which are caused by a decrease of oxygenated blood flow to the extremities.

The prognosis with this illness is often positive and victims can live for many years with the disease. However, because the illness is progressive, victims may require treatment as they age.

Immediate medical attention should be sought in these circumstances and any known asbestos exposure should be mentioned to your Doctor.

Asbestosis can often be misdiagnosed as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis or even COPD and an experienced Solicitor, like at James Murray Solicitors will be able to advise and work around the potential challenges in proving this type of illness.

Our Solicitors successfully represent Clients in recovering compensation where the Defendant/Employer/Company is no longer in existence. We trace the original liability insurer in order to secure compensation and where necessary will restore a dissolved company to the Companies Register.
