Regional Pay is Inevitable

Yes of course regional public service pay differentials are the right way to go.

But not just now…

…not in the middle of a depression.

Having South East wage scales for public servants in the North West will always suck the talent out of the private sector here and eventually should be ended. (and, I think, will be)

The immediate problem is that highly paid Government workers, teachers etc have excess cash left over after paying the very low local rents and mortgages payments, entertainment etc as all overheads are cheaper than in the South.  They will deny this extra cash, of course, but compare their situation to cash strapped teachers and other public servants further south where house values are huge as then are mortgage payments and rents and everything else.
