Vibration White Finger/HAVS

Have you ever used vibratory equipment whilst at work?

Do you suffer from tingling and numbness in the fingers which cause sleep disturbance? Do you sometimes lose the be ability to feel with your fingers? In the cold and wet weather do the tips of your fingers go white then red and on recovery feel painful? If so, you may have hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) or vibration white finger (VWF).

What is HAVS?

Hand-arm vibration syndrome comes from the use of hand-held power tools and is the cause of significant ill health; painful and disabling disorders of the blood vessels, nerves, joints and muscles of the hands and arms. This condition is commonly referred to as Vibration White Finger.

Around five million workers are exposed to hand-arm vibration in the workplace. Two million of these workers are exposed to levels of vibration where there are clear risks of
developing disease.

Jobs requiring regular and frequent use of vibrating tools and equipment and handling of vibrating materials are found in a wide range of industries, for example:

  • Building and maintenance of roads and railways;
  • Construction;
  • Estate management (eg maintenance of grounds, parks, water courses, and roads);
  • Foundries;
  • Heavy engineering;
  • Manufacturing concrete products;
  • Mines and quarries;
  • Motor vehicle manufacture and repair;
  • Public utilities (eg water, gas, electricity, telecommunications);
  • Shipbuilding and repair.
