What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a highly heat resistant fibrous silicate material that can be woven into fabrics, used in fire resistant and insulating materials amongst other things.
Asbestos was widely used and in particular, found its way into products like ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, boilers, spray coatings, garage roof tiles, asbestos gloves, blankets and mitts.
Many buildings contain asbestos, however if the asbestos is well maintained and is not disturbed or does not disintegrate, it does not present an immediate risk to health.
However, if the material containing asbestos is disturbed or damaged, the fibres may be released and released into the air and any person within proximity to the damaged asbestos is likely to inhale the fibres and could suffer injury.
There are three main types of asbestos that have been used commercially. The most common are:
- Crocidolite– known as blue asbestos, which was used in spray coating and pipe insulation and cement products
- Amosite– known as brown asbestos, most frequently used in cement sheets, pipe insulation and thermal products
- Chrysotile– known as white asbestos, commonly used in rooves, ceilings, walls and floors. This would also be used for car parts such as brake linings, gaskets, pipe insulation and boiling seals.
Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos dust is at risk of developing an asbestos related illness. However, it is important to remember that not everyone exposed to asbestos will develop an asbestos related illness.
