Meet The Team

Our Key Players:

Christian Sereni – based at our Bootle Office

Department Supervisor

Christian heads the Prison Law Team and specialises in this niche legal area.

He began practicing Prison Law in 2007 and was one of the founding members of the Prison Law department at his previous firm.

He has a wealth of experience in all kinds of prison law matters, including:

  • Parole Board Hearings
  • IPP and Life Sentenced prisoners
  • Independent Adjudications
  • Appeals against recall to prison
  • HDC and early release applications
  • Re-categorisation Boards
  • Judicial Reviews and Human Rights Law
  • Appeals against licence conditions

He prides himself on a sense of fair play and will always go the extra mile to ensure that the relevant executive body acts fairly and treats Prisoners appropriately.

Christian says, ‘‘It is no secret that Prisoner’s rights are not particularly high up on the Government’s or indeed the Public’s agenda. This can mean that some Prisoners are simply forgotten about and effectively left to stagnate. It strikes me that these individuals deserve the right to rehabilitation as well fair and humane treatment during their detention. I am often the only person who cares what happens to a particular prisoner and the treatment that they receive and I take that responsibility very seriously.’’

Christian knows he can call upon lawyers from around the firm to represent and use their specialist legal knowledge in the many kinds of prison tribunals and his department has now grown to include several fee earners and support staff.

The persuasive advocate

Christian has developed excellent advocacy skills in this complex niche area of law saying that it is solid case preparation which wins the day.

His wealth of experience includes independent adjudications, Parole Board Oral Hearings and hearings involving Lifers and IPP sentenced prisoners.

What is of note is the large client base the firm has built up, mostly on upon his reputation and the resultant client referrals.

Jim Murray says, “To grow so fast, we must be doing something right!”

He thoroughly enjoys building relationships with clients, often representing them over long periods of time while also campaigning for their rights on many fronts.

For those who have lost their freedom, they need someone outside with skills and committment, and whom they can trust…

Christian says,” I have been advising prisoners for so many years, there is little I find that surprises me. It’s a great responsibility to know that I can be the only person who cares what happens to a particular prisoner and what treatment they are suffering”

This can include criminal law for offences in prison, family law for family breakdowns that happen so often outside and civil law to obtain compensation for negligence found inside prison.
